산에서 여운을 얻고 그 여운을 작품에 담는다. 감상자는 작품 속에서 산을 보며, 동시에 산 속에서 내가 받은 여운(감흥)을 들여다보게 된다.
간접적인 경험으로 얻기 힘든 이야기를 담기 위해 작업과 산행을 항상 병행한다. 주변의 산을 오르며 이상적 산수를 그리기 위한 여운과 감정을 얻는다. 산의 아름다움과 경외감을 알아갈수록, 현실 같으면서 한 편으론 이상을 뛰어넘는 풍경의 모습을 상상해낼 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 나의 경험과 이야기를 작품에 담아, 작품을 통해 나와 관람객 사이의 상호공감대를 만들어내는 것이 본인이 추구하는 산수화 방향이다.
‘談’은 이야기, 여운, 감흥, 감정, 경험, 추억 등 직접 경험을 통한 이야깃거리를 뜻한다. ‘談景’는 이런 이야기가 담긴 산수다.
산의 모습은 변하지 않으면서도 항상 같지 않다. 하나의 산수화를 보아도 어떤 사람은 산수 속에 있는 산을 오른 경험을 떠오르면서도, 동시에 새로움을 느끼게 된다. 산수에는 이런 오묘한 매력이 있으며, 사람의 상상력을 무한대로 펼치게 하는 광활함이 있다. 평생을 그려도 만족하지 못할 무궁한 가능성을 지닌 산수풍경은 작업을 즐겁게 한다.
Nature impresses upon all of us. Through my work, I strive to not simply represent the physical forms of the landscape, but to capture, as in a portriait, nature's ephemeral impressions.
Creation of work and hiking are always performed simultaneously in order to portray stories that are hardly obtained unless through first-hand experience. Hiking nearby mountains give observations and emotions that are essential to the pursuit of idealistic landscape. The more you understand the majestic beauty of the mountains, the more you can expand your imagination towards surreal dimension with a beauty surpassing that of the real world. Connecting with the viewers through the work that encompasses such is the desired direction of my art.
'談(Dam)' translates as an anecdote of one’s very own experience which gives aftertastes, inspirations, emotions, recollection, and memories. '談景(Damgyeong)' refers to works of arts with such stories.
The look of mountains never change; and yet such looks are never the same twice. Looking at painted mountains, one may be reminded of the time (s)he hiked the mountain in the painting. Yet, one will be presented with feelings of the new. The mountains have such subtle charms, and their vastness allows one to expand imagination beyond limit. Landscape scenery with unlimited possibilities that cannot be satisfied even with lifetime’s work makes the work pleasing.
